Flash Lite 1.1 Mobile Google Calendar

Posted by Ali Mills Wed, 08 Nov 2006 06:42:00 GMT

The video above demonstrates the Google Calendar edition of the Flash Lite 1.1 mobile calendar project we’re working on at Pattern Park. Please forgive the video quality. It’s just a sneak peak, and we’re not marketing guys.

In the video, I walk through launching the calendar (which, as a nod to CL2, we call CaLendar2) from a deck icon; navigating its month, day, and event views; and adding an event to Google Calendar with the application’s hook to Google’s SMS gateway.

The version demo’ed above is a quite a few iterations beyond what I showed during my MAXUP presentation. In fact, it’s bug free. You may be wondering, “it sounds mature, is CaLendar2 available in source or packaged form”? Well, for those asking, thanks for asking. The answer is, “not yet”. We still need to implement a distribution process because of some Flash Lite 1.1 details. Our plan is to have that process complete in time to release CaLendar2 with Lifebin. We’ll be talking about Lifebin quite a bit in future posts.

If you’re interested in CaLendar2, will you please post a comment letting us know? If there’s enough interest, we’re willing to shift priorities to get the distribution process implemented sooner. Also, if you feel like CaLendar2 is something you would pay for, will you please include how much you feel it’s worth in your comment? Luke and I plan for it to be free, but it’s always interesting to get a feel for something’s value.

  1. Rob Moore commented: I'm definitely interested in trying this out! Is there support for Google Hosted Domains? (The mobile gmail app doesn't support that yet). As for license fees, I paid $20 for IM+ just so I could load Google Talk and AIM simultaneously on my hand held device. I think this calendar app would be at least as useful if not more. I'd dish that much out again for this. Thanks, and I look forward to trying it out soon! FYI: I'm using a Motorola ROKR E1 with Cingular MediaNET service. Thanks, Rob Moore http://www.robmoore.org email@robmoore.org

  2. Josh J replied: I'd be interested in seeing the source. The way it pulls the xml feed, sends sms's, etc. I'd be willing to pay for it, if the code was clean and documented well.

  3. Diego commented: Wow!, yes Im so interested in try this, actually my E61 calendar is sync with other services, because all available dont work 100%, so Im using zyb, but the converting process to upload then to gcalendar is tedious. Calendar services are so important for my work (lawyer) so security is very important. Thx and good work! If you want here you have a tester.

  7. James commented: Great product, i've been looking for an app like yours. I've tried gcalsync, but this appears to be far more convient. I would definately be interested in testing your app. Curiosity question: approximately how many kb's are trasfered each time the app loads (for the data plan)? Feel free to email me at jwbir@umich.edu

  17. Josh Robertson commented: Yes, yes, yes....I have spent 2 full days now trying to find some methodoligy to sync my Mobile Outlook with Google Calendar, or just to find some software for my Windows Mobile phone that I can store my calendar dates "offline" until I have a connection. I don't pay for internet service on my WM phone, but I do have 802.11b service on it, so when I'm in the officeo or in a coffeeshop, I'd like the calendar app on my phone to be updated... - Josh

  18. Josh Robertson replied: BTW, if it worked, I think it'd be worth $20...really, it's worth more to me, but since I wouldn't be reimbursed by my work, I would need to look for something around $15-$20 bucks. I am always hesitant about paying too much for services for my WM phone because not all of them work...a 30-day trial would be best...if I knew it worked, I'd pay for it... - Josh

  19. Austin commented: I am interested in this for my Blackberry 8700c. I would prefer free (obviously) but would pay up to $20.

  20. Manolis replied: This is incredible!! Well done! Do you have support for multiple calendars? I couldn't tell if on the day view "MAX" and "MAXUP" were in fact two different calendars. I'd definitely be interested. Free would be best of course, and can get you wide user base. Then ad revenue might be a way to go once you have an established user base. A $20 fee could remove the ads.
